Refreshing and bringing up to date the look and feel of your bedroom is something that should be done at least every couple of years. The good news is that doing it does not have to be an expensive project. You can significantly improve the way your bedroom looks for less than $500, which is a good investment considering that you probably spend more time in your bedroom than any other room in your home.
Buying a new duvet, linens and pillows should be the first step that you take. You can buy a new set of them for as little as $50 and they will instantly give the whole room a newer and fresher look. You can take one of two approaches – either match up what you buy with the colors and patterns on your walls and carpet or just go for your favorite colors and patterns. Some people feel that they have to play safe and just go for white items, but it is your private room and you can do whatever you like with it.
Replacing the whole carpet in your bedroom would be good, but doing so would not be cheap. An alternative is to buy a nice rug – one which reflects your personality. Look for one in your favorite color or with a cool and unique texture, such as a shag rug. You can get yourself a great rug for just $100, and for that price you can expect it to last for years.
Consider also replacing your door and wardrobe knobs and handles. There are many brands that offer inexpensive options that look terrific whilst still being very affordable. As most bedroom furniture has only a handful of handles and knobs, you should consider paying a bit extra for really nice looking ones, as the overall cost of replacing all of them will still not be very high.
Buying a whole new bed would be very expensive, and you do not really need one, as it is only really the headboard that can be seen anyway (the sheets and duvet cover up most of the bed). A high quality, cool looking headboard can be picked up for somewhere around $250. Whilst that is not cheap, you will be getting yourself an item that will be the centerpiece of your room – having the same visual importance as a fireplace does in a living room.
Something that you can do for free is to re-organize the inside of your wardrobes and drawers. Have a clear-out and ensure that the only items that you keep are those which you have worn / used in the past year. The more junk items that you hang on to the more you will associate your bedroom with being a junk room rather than a space for resting and relaxing. You will also have more space for the items that you do use regularly, which means that there is less chance of them being left on out on view and creating a cluttered look.
