With the holidays approaching quickly and the New Year right around the corner many people are deciding that a vacation is necessary, and not many vacation are more enjoyable than a ski vacation to Deer Valley, Utah. Usually when people start thinking about what it takes to put together a stellar ski vacation package for themselves and their family and friends the first consideration is where to go. When I ask most people where they think of when they think skiing and snowboarding I typically get a response for Colorado resorts and sometimes B.C. Now there are lots of reasons why Colorado is indeed a fantastic place to ski and ride but believe me when I say Deer Valley Utah has everything Colorado does and maybe more.
First, The Location: Deer Valley opened as a fully operational ski resort in 1981. Since its opening in the 80’s Deer Valley has garnished a fantastic reputation as a world class destination for skiing. The resort places great pride on its customer service and quality of experience for patrons. Because of this awesome commitment to care Deer Valley was named the number 1 ski resort in North America by SKI Magazine in 2008, 2009, and yes 2010. Wow. That’s pretty impressive considering the competition.
Second, The Town: Deer Valley Utah is actually located on an old mining town that is part of Park City. Its relatively close distance to Salt Lake City (36 miles) makes it a wonderfully short ride from the Salt Lake City International Airport. One of my favorite aspects of the resort is that it’s so close to the historic main street, only about a mile walk. So after a long day skiing, a walk through the beautiful old town district is close as can be.
Third, The Mountain: At a base elevation of 6,570ft Deer Valley commands 100 runs that cover nearly 2,026 acres. There is terrain park for the snowboarders in your group and plenty of Gondola’s (21 in total). The lift system is quite impressive with a skier capacity of 46,500/hr.
To wrap things up I just want to repeat when your considering your ski vacation package this year, take Deer Valley into your calculations.

Ana just turned 7 before her ski trip to Deer Valley with her Grandparents. Her Grandfather (Robert Davis) is a ski instructor and was a professional skier. He has been training her since she was 18 months. Ana is 11 now and turns many heads when she passes them down the mountain.. We will post another video of Ana this winter when we find someone who can keep up with her. She is a real Tiger. Thanks Dad for your hard work and not charging for her private lessons.

We leisurely traversed the long wooden boardwalk lying between Hilton Head Resort and the Atlantic Ocean. The boardwalk deposited us on Singleton Beach in Hilton Head South Carolina. A beautiful stretch of white powder sand extended in both directions and the Atlantic surf rolled gently onto the shore about 50 yards dead ahead. It was Spring and the air was warm, not oppressive.
The “world’s most expensive volleyball court” (according to our guide) lay just behind the dune. The Island’s only beachfront cabana was situated just back from that on the boardwalk. The undulating green of the Robert Trent Jones professional Golf Course was maybe 25 yards to our right.
The clear blue Atlantic stretched out before me, restrained as if by an invisible hand. “Who needs Hawaii,” I’m thinking, “when we’ve got Hilton Head?”
<b>A Strategic Vacation Destination</b>
Hilton Head South Carolina is the most popular vacation destination of the entire Eastern United States due to its central location on the East Coast. Hilton Head ocean front rentals are very popular during vacation season, typically commanding 0 per week or more. Likewise, Hilton Head rentals are a popular place for Snow Birds to spend the winter, when rates drop closer to 0 a month.
It’s an easy drive to Hilton Head Island for over half the U.S. population. Yet Hilton Head South Carolina is just far enough south to have the look and feel of a tropical paradise.
Parris Island, just 20 miles north lacks that special ambiance. Maybe that’s why the Marines chose it for a training camp. From paradise to purgatory in just 20 miles.
Thus a Hilton Head vacation, is a popular option during a full 8 months of the year –- late March to early October. Today the beach was almost deserted – it was hard to imagine that in just a few short weeks it would be teeming with 4th of July celebrants.
<b>A Strategic Barrier Island</b>
I was told that the Hilton Head South Carolina barrier island is second only to Manhattan in size on the Atlantic seaboard. The barrier islands protect the coastline and often shelter entire wildlife ecosystems, an example being the intermittent lake we had just crossed on the boardwalk.
Hilton Head South Carolina was also an important piece in Lincoln’s anaconda strategy to deny southern import of war supplies. The naval engagement in the Battle of Port Royal at the north end of the Island gave the Union a strategic staging area from which to conduct that strategy.
